Hobo? Wolf? Spiders? Smith isn’t making a lot of sense, but it’s clear this isn’t the right time or place to try and debrief him… he’s obviously suffering from some kind of mental trauma. “Kid who could fuck with my mind…” there was a kid like that at the riot, too, seemed to be a Brotherhood agent… maybe this is the result of some kind of psychic attack? Were it anyone else, he’d wonder how the boy had escaped… but with Smith’s power, it’s not that unreasonable.
The strange mask seems to cry out for explanation as well, especially given its emotions motif and the electronics that saturate it… though again, discussing it now seems like a bad idea. Warren wants to examine it, see if there’s anything he can learn about the Brotherhood from it, but at the same time he isn’t at all convinced it’s a safe thing to take back to the Institute… in fact, this whole operation might be just a lure to plant the device.
But the way Smith is breaking down, helpless and inconsolable, makes it impossible for Warren to think too long about it. "OK… it’ll be OK. Whatever attacked you, you got away and you called for help and you’re safe now. It’s OK." His voice is smooth and even as he sits down next to Smith, tentatively putting a reassuring arm around his shoulder. "I’m going to take you home now, is that all right? I need you to relax and let me carry you. I promise, it’s perfectly safe, nothing’s going to hurt you. Is that OK?"
While Smith thinks about that, Warren calls the Institute number again. "This is Warren. I’ve found Smith; he appears to be the victim of a psychic attack of some sort; the details are unclear. I’m bringing him in; I suggest Jake and Hank take a look at him, make sure there’s no permanent damage. I’m not sure of the condition of his vehicle; I’ll come back to examine the area once he’s in care. I’d also suggest contacting all our off-campus students… this might not be an isolated attack. If I’m not back at the Institute in ten minutes, send backup."
Then he returns his attention to the traumatized boy, avoiding any sudden gestures. "All right… are you ready to go?" He waits for agreement before taking Smith in his arms and launching back towards the Institute, leaving the strange mask on the bus stop bench behind him.
