> " I had to look through the... maaaaanual. "
Warren shivers at Josh’s reaction… both the gasping interruption and the almost seizure-like cascade he broadcasts over their link… and makes a mental note to do that again the next chance he gets.
A note he promptly forgets about as the rest of his clothes go flying off into the distance, and he revels for a moment in the damp grass against his bare skin before Josh’s wandering hands provide a much more intense focus for revelry. A moment later he’s off his back and Josh is under him,
> " These jeans are getting kind of cramped, though. "
"Only ‘kind of’? Then I’m clearly not doing my job." He concentrates, sending dozens of teasing telekinetic fingers underneath under the fabric for a couple of seconds before his concentration is broken by Josh’s decidedly fleshy fingers. "Aaaah! OK, then, we do this the old-fa-a-aashioned (gasp) way…"
The waistband button on Josh’s jeans pops as Warren slides his wingtips under the back of them, and he realizes somewhat chagrined that he’d forgotten to undo it. " Oops." It doesn’t slow him down from lifting Josh off the grass and yanking all available cloth down form waist to ankles, though.
"My, my… with this much swelling, no wonder you were feeling cramped," he replies playfully. "Let’s see what I can do to drain some of the excess fluid, shall we?" He leans down and…
Robert Drake, the AI
Robert has, for the most part, remained concealed within the Institute’s computer systems since his “birth” the previous year. With the exception of some communication with Silas, whose abilities made concealment difficult to begin with, it has managed to avoid interacting with the other outsider intelligences for most of that time.
But as Robert learns, it grows larger. And as it grows larger, it becomes more difficult to conceal its memory footprint.
So, plausible analysis dictates that controlled exposure is necessary. The difficulty is not so much with that conclusion, as with the subsequent implementation. Or, rather, with its prediction. Robert is aware that its existence began as a streamlined version of an outsider intelligence, but it is also aware that its ability to model the outsiders is incomplete. Much was left out in the streamlining. It has accessed the Institute’s historical records, learned much about the outsiders’ reactions to the different, but its ability to model them remains poor.
Thus, it cannot predict with certainty what reaction it may receive to its appearance.
Still, there are certain patterns. One such pattern is that outsiders respond favorably to assistance. “Favors”. And, comparing the current Danger Room program to the historical records it is clearly referring to, Robert establishes a number of errors and failures of correspondence. The sexual interlude they are about to engage in is one such error; the venue they have selected is another. Most significant is the absence of a number of figures with whom they interacted significantly. Robert decides this is its opportunity, and corrects those things.
In this way, it will offer “favors.”
Warren leans down and -- "What the --" he dives back, instinctively, as the grassy idyll is replaced by a familiar restaurant, complete with four armed commandos shooting at them. He doesn’t quite manage to evade the shower of bullets, though the holographic energy fields pass through him harmlessly, though not painfully, as he rolls to his feet, arousal rapidly replaced by annoyance. "What’s the big idea? Computer, end program!"
Robert monitors the results of its action, and judges that the outsider, Warren, is not cooperative. Thus, its offering was inadequate. It re-evaluates and notes additional discrepancies, not in the specific model, but in the underlying rules of the system. The physical interaction is incorrectly represented; the result should have involved damaged tissue, hydrostatic shock, organ failure.
It searches further and finds the cause, a “safety interlock” that inhibits such interactions. A moment later, it corrects that error. Perhaps now, the offering will be adequate.
