Dr. Reed Richards – "Mr. Fantastic"
28, genius biophysicist, half a dozen advanced degrees, holds patents that make him independently wealthy.
Friend and professional colleague of Hank McCoy’s
MGH mutate with highly elastic body
(March 2007) Director of SHIELD Research and Development
Dr. Susan Storm Richards – "Invisible Woman"
24, geneticist, former student of Reed’s, now his wife.
MGH mutate, can turn invisible and project invisible force barriers
(March 2007) Assistant Director of SHIELD Research and Development
Johnny Storm – "Human Torch"
21, minor celebrity, racecar driver, extreme sports aficionado, Susan’s brother.
MGH mutate, could turn his body into living flame and project/control that flame pyrokinetically
(December 2006) Died of MGH-power overload.
Benjamin Grimm – "Thing"
32, retired Air Force pilot turned private bodyguard, college friend of Reed’s.
Stone-like body, enormous strength and durability.
Background
On Nov 3 2006 Reed’s lab was attacked by a team of mutants who discovered he was working on a shelf-stable synthetic Cure for the military. The four happened to be present at the time, and accidentally received heavy doses of his experimental serum, which he had not yet begun human testing on. The attackers got away without being identified.
On Nov 5 Reed held a press conference, explaining all of the above, and explaining further that he’d discovered his experimental serum was not in fact a synthetic Cure, but rather the opposite – an Anomalous Genetic Sequence Expressor (AGSE) that could trigger mutant abilities in normal humans who possessed latent mutations. The press immediately dubbed the AGSE “Mutant Growth Hormone.”
Reed also announced that he and the other three had in fact developed such powers.
Reactions to this announcement were, predictably, mixed. The prospect of artificially induced mutations excited many, scared many. Reed moved back into the Baxter Building where his lab was, rebuilding it with far more advanced security systems, and continued work on developing a safe, reliable version of the MGH. It’s scheduled to enter full-scale human testing in 2012 with a good chance of being legally available in 2015.
Reed's MGH was used by Project: Strikeback to develop mutant soldiers; Reed himself (and the other Fantastic Four) was subjected to Emma Frost's mental manipulations.
After Strikeback attacked the X-Men (December 2006), Hank McCoy discovered the connection. This led to a battle between the X-Men and the FF, during which they were freed from mental control and Johnny Storm died of MGH overload. Afterwards, the survivors stayed in Xavier's Institute for a while.
The Richards' developed treatments for prolonging the lives of MGH mutates, and continue to work on a cure. In March 2007 they were tapped by Nick Fury to lead SHIELD's R&D program.
