Name: Katherine “Kitty” Pryde
Code Name: Shadowcat
Age: 18
Appearance: Kitty stands 5’5. She had long brown hair and piercing eyes. She is slight of build and does not seem intimidating at first glance. She has a sweet smile and normally tries to appear happy. She dresses as any other teen does, preferring to wear jeans and t-shirts to formal clothing. Her old tennis shoes are a trademark of hers and when she is relaxing it is not unusual to see her in front of a computer in an oversized t-shirt and jeans.
Mutation: Phasing, Invisibility, Ability to phase others and objects that she touches.
Kitty has the ability to pass through solid matter by passing her atoms through the spaces between the atoms of the object through which she is moving. In this way she and the object through which she is passing can temporarily merge without interacting, and each is unharmed when Shadowcat has finished passing through the object. This process is called phasing, and it renders her almost completely intangible to physical touch.
Shadowcat passes through objects at the same rate of speed at which she is moving before she "enters" them. Since she is unable to breathe while "inside" an object, she can only continuously phase through solid objects (as when she travels underground) as long as she can hold her breath.
Using her power began as an optional ability, but for a period Kitty existed in a naturally "phased" state, and had to consciously choose to become solid. However, she has now returned to her original form. While phasing, she does not physically walk on surfaces, but rather interacts with the molecules of air above them, allowing her to ascend and descend. While phased, she is immune to most physical attacks, and has a high resistance to telepathy. The density of some materials can prove deleterious to her phasing, causing her to be severely disoriented or experience pain if she tries to pass through them.
Kitty can also extend her powers to phase other people and objects. Currently, she is able to phase at least a half a dozen other people (or objects of similar mass) with her, so long as they establish and maintain physical contact with her. She has trained herself to go automatically, by reflex, into a phasing state at any indication of danger, such as a loud noise like a gunshot, in order to protect herself.
Affiliation: X-Men
Background: Katherine Anne "Kitty" Pryde was born in Deerfield, Illinois to Carmen and Theresa Pryde. Of Jewish descent, her paternal grandfather, Samuel Prydeman, was held in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Kitty started to have headaches at age thirteen, headaches which signaled the emergence of her mutant powers. She was approached by both the X-Men's Charles Xavier and the Hellfire Club's White Queen, Emma Frost, both of whom hoped to recruit her for their respective causes. Kitty was unnerved by Frost, observing that the White Queen had looked at her as if she were "something good to eat." She got along better with Xavier and the three X-men who escorted him to his meeting with her and her parents, becoming fast friends with Ororo Munroe. Ororo told Kitty who she really was and about the X-Men, which made the teenager even more enthusiastic about attending Xavier's school.
Kitty has always been the quiet type. She is the one that will sit in the background and observe while the rest argue things out. She pulled into herself shortly after arriving at the school and focused on her studies and getting her powers under control. Being intelligent she was able to focus on different aspects of study along with her usual classes. She took a liking to computers and soon was capable of mastering any program she set her mind to.
When the attack on Alcatraz was going to take place, Kitty stepped in as a full X-men. Her abilities coupled with her intelligence lent a hand to the few that were left to fight. Alongside Colossus and Iceman she faced the overwhelming amount of Brotherhood that were after the source of the cure. In fact, it was Kitty who rescued the boy from the facility and helped to keep him safe.
Returning to the school seemed like the logical choice for Kitty. She was young and the school was the perfect cover for her still. She was now an official part of the X-men and things seemed to be going her way. Power wise she was developing control and was able to extend her range when it came to what or who she took with her. Her phasing was getting better and her comfort level in the terms of being a mutant was also improving. This was until another power decided to surface.
Kitty has expectedly acquired the ability to turn invisible. This was not a voluntary act at first. She would completely disappear at the oddest times. This of course made it hard to hide. If she was to disappear in front of anyone they would know. This scared the girl and she fled, making sure no one knew where she was going. Packing the few things she believed she would need she left the only place she truly felt comfortable behind and was on her own.
Time passed as it usually did. Kitty would not spend any significant amount of time in one place. Her disappearing act was not under control and it worried her that she would be found out. She was after all not normal and there were times she wondered if Rogue had the right idea. Rogue had taken the cure. She had become normal. Kitty wondered if she should have done the same. At the time it did not seem like a good idea. Her power did not hinder her from anything and was not something that was openly obvious. She appeared normal whenever she wanted. But now with the new one developing she wanted it all to go away.
There were times when she was almost seen disappearing. Children had caught it more than once and it scared her to think that she would be found out. If others discovered what she was doing than she would be singled out without any friends to help her or to talk to. She missed her friends dearly. Thinking about them always hurt more than it helped. She had walked away from the only people that understood her and the only safe place she truly had.
Kitty ended up in New York before she realized that she had wandered so far. She had never intended on going that far away from the one safe place she knew of. She just wanted to clear her head and try to get herself under control. The busy city though seemed to contribute more to her fear and this triggered her new found powers even more often. Fear gripped her almost constantly and there were days at a time that she would remain invisible. This drove her into a state of almost dementia. She closed herself off from everything that reminded her that she was human. She slipped into a state of mind that was close to driving her crazy. Once again she began to wander.
She had become accustomed to not being seen. Even when she was visible most ignored the girl. This did not help the fact that she was struggling to accept the new ability she had developed and find a way to control it. She would find herself walking through people at times and wonder why they did not react. This was of course because she was invisible when she was doing this. Her powers could be combined as well as be used separate.
Before long Kitty was once again in familure surroundings. She new the woods that she walked through, recognized the area as one that had become friendly to her. She had returned to the school. While she wanted nothing more than to walk inside, there was a nagging feeling that she had abandoned them for the past three months. She had walked out without a goodbye or a reason for leaving. Also she had not gotten the new ability under control. Instead of returning to the place that was the only home she thought of, she found a secluded area close to the outskirts of the woods and contemplated what she would do. No one was able to find her there, that she was sure of, and most of the time she would remain invisible.
