Name:
Matthew Craft
Codename:
Warhead
Age:
15
Mutation:
Matthew possesses a nuclear core which empowers him with radioactive energy. This energy grants him with a few noticeable attributes.
The most noticeable effects are in his physical strength and endurance. He can withstand anything this side of a bazooka rocket and he is able to lift up to one and a half tons. This is due not only to his radioactive metabolism, but also to a small layer of lead that lays just beneath his skin. The lead serves as a barrier between his nuclear body and any organic material around him, preventing radiation sickness in others.
He also has the ability to create small radioactive blasts that he can fire off at enemies. Matthew can control the size of the blasts; his smallest is barely strong enough to decimate a piece of paper, but his largest attacks have been known to blow through reinforced steel walls and leave craters twenty feet across. Matthew still has not achieved his full potential and his overall power is expected to greatly exceed his current level. He is immune to all levels of radiation.
Matthew stands at 6’ 11’’, weighs 350lbs and is still growing, leaving many to believe that his height and size are a side effect of his mutation, but it is highly debateable; most members in his family are surprisingly tall. He is also considered to be a musical genius and again, many believe this to be another aspect of his mutation, but there is no proof.
Matthew is a Class 4 mutant.
Weaknesses:
Matthew is susceptible to overexertion if he is not careful; he tends to forget that the same energy his body runs off also fuels his attacks. If he creates a particularly large blast, it has immediate consequences including fatigue, drowsiness, illusions, and faintness.
He can also be extremely harmful to those around him if he is not careful. While his lead-laced skin protects others in a non-combatant environment, Matthew’s nuclear bursts have the potential of causing severe to fatal radiation sickness if others are directly exposed. For this reason, Matthew usually avoids using his ability when and where possible, relying solely on his endurance and strength.
Matthew is also incredibly protective, often looking out for those around him. He is renowned for his overprotective behaviour towards his sister, Toni Craft, despite their age difference, her own abilities, and her obvious protests. He is known to go a little ‘overboard’ when regarding others’ safety, often doing more harm than good.
Physical Description:
Matthew stands at an intimidating height of 6’ 11’’ and weighs a proportionate 350lbs. He maintains a muscular physique and is often mistaken for being much older than he appears. He has shortly cropped brown hair and dull green eyes. Despite being family, Matthew holds very little resemblance to his sister, Toni.
Many who have witnessed Matthew deploying his radioactive blasts have claimed that he takes on a green glowing appearance. This is not true, his mutation does not, as of yet, cause any outward physical alterations. What others saw were effects caused by the glowing blasts themselves; as they cast green light onto his body.
Personality:
Matthew is extremely kind hearted and usually quite shy, which usually helps fuel the beliefs that he and Toni are not, in fact, related.
He is typically very casual and calm, which has granted him a great amount of respect at the mansion. Many of the younger students often turn to him for guidance and reassurance. He served as an impromptu councilor after the events of the Stryker attack on the mansion, and then again after the death of the Professor, Scott Summers, and Jean Grey.
Even though he is typically calm and collected, it is not uncommon for him to get very focused and intent on something, especially music. He’ll usually drill at something until he gets what he wants out of it. Once he is successful, then Matthew usually gets overly excited, usually surprising most with his quick, chirpy attitude.
While he is not completely comfortable in social environments, Matthew loves to entertain others with his musical talents. He excels at the piano and readily plays at school dances and other events. Despite being just a student, he also runs the music club and organizations a variety of music-based projects and outings.
When involved in a fight, Matthew will eagerly get involved but he his usually reluctant to use his radiation abilities, opting to simply use brute force. When he does resort to his nuclear blasts, he is typically overly cautious and carefully plots out each attack, instead of acting on impulse and instinct. If another is inadvertently exposed or harmed by the radiation, Matthew feels incredibly guilty and often seeks out the brutally honest consoles of his sister.
With regards to his sister, his only sibling, Matthew is protective almost to a fault. He readily defends her, whether physically or not. Toni is not as appreciative of the attention, as it often interferes with the more private aspects of her life, especially boyfriends. Most of the time, Toni tries to put Matthew (or Matty as she calls him) in his place and while me may leave her alone for a few days, he always comes back to protect her. To most, the defense of his sister often comes out aggressively even though he doesn’t usually intend it to be. He usually doesn’t try to start a fight, but rest assured, he will finish it.
Other than his protective nature, Matthew and Toni share a surprisingly close bond and rarely ever fight. It is another reason why many believe, at first, that the two are not related.
Background:
Matthew was born six years after his sister, Toni. He spent his early childhood in Seattle, WA before his family moved to Dover, NJ when he was five. There, he grew up normally, though he was known for his abnormal size.
When he was eight years old, his sister was taken to the hospital with a severe and extraordinary case of anaemia. It was, at that point, that both he and his family realized that the X-gene was present in their family. Still too young to understand the implications of such a surprising evolutionary outcome, Matthew continued on with his childhood, unfazed but aware of his sister’s mutation.
When he was fourteen, the same age his sister had been, his powers manifested for the first time. He was on board his school bus when it was T-boned by an eighteen-wheeler. The force of the crash sent the bus onto its side and into a building. Thanks to the reinforced body of the bus, injuries were kept to a relative minimum, with Matthew in the best shape of them all. With the bus on its side and most of the students dazed and disoriented, panic quickly ensued, forcing Matthew to take charge.
Using an amount of strength he never knew existed, Matthew was able to literally tear open the rear door, which had otherwise been sealed shut by the crumpled walls. He managed to get all of the students and the driver out of the bus safely and proceeded to the pull the driver from the eighteen-wheeler.
But unfortunately, the havoc didn’t end there. School buses possess thick grates of steel that protect their gas tanks from collisions but trucks typically didn’t. Matthew was quick to realize that even though everyone was out of harms way, the truck, which was experiencing a small engine fire after the crash, still posed a massive risk. The fuel tank had ruptured in the crash and diesel had been spilt all over the ground. Matthew watched as the fuel caught flame.
Without being completely aware of his actions, Matthew created his first nuclear blast when he covered himself from the imminent explosion. The blast had been strong enough to launch the destroyed eighteen-wheeler into the air, where it exploded. The charred remnants of the truck landed in the middle of the road, causing very little damage in comparison to what might have happened if it had been on the ground when it exploded.
Fortunately for Matthew, no one fully understood what happened and his powers remained a secret. There were, however, several cases of radiation sickness that ensued. Unsure whether or not it had been caused by him blasting the truck, he informed his parents, who weren’t entirely surprised. They had suspected that Matthew possessed the X-gene after they had found out about his sister. After contacting a family friend and their official ‘mutant advisor’, Dr. Tobey Caine, the parents called Xavier’s Institute for Gifted Youngsters, as their eldest child was already attending. Knowing that Matthew’s abilities were likely to be far more harmful that Toni’s, they all readily agreed and he was sent to the Institute. He arrived seven months after his sister had been sent there. He has been a student ever since. [Matthew’s arrival precedes the events of the first X-men movie, but only by a few months.]

“Hey, Pete?” Matthew asked casually, pulling a can of soda from the fridge.
“Da?” Peter responded between bites of his sandwich, glancing up from his book.
“Saw you today with my sister. The whole mistletoe thing.” The Russian nearly choked. Matthew was the last person he wanted to see that little incident.
“I—uh…” The teen grinned and waved off the older student’s discomfort as he downed the entire can of soda.
“I’m not here to rag on you, Pete. That was just some stupid prank that Bobby set up. I can’t get mad at you for that.” Peter swallowed cautiously. Matthew was one of the only students he knew he couldn’t take on in a fight.
“That is good for me then.” He tried to calm his voice and focus back on his sandwich.
“Yeah, it is.” Matthew smirked and rested his arms on the counter. “Anyways, it got me to thinkin’. Are you heading out for Christmas this year?” That was certainly a question Peter hadn’t been expecting.
“Nyet, I will be staying at the mansion for the holidays.”
“Really? How come?” The larger student frowned slightly.
“I do not have enough time to fly home and back before our classes start again.” Peter shrugged lightly, seemingly unaffected by missing the holidays with his family.
“Well, why don’t you come home with Toni and I? My parents would be glad to have you, and I know that my sister would be happy.”
“I could not impose on such an important holiday—my presence would make Toni happy?!” Peter raised an eyebrow as his voice climbed a few notes. Since when was Matthew willing to let him spend time with Toni?
“Look, Pete. Just because I bug you a lot about my sister, it doesn’t mean I don’t like you. In fact, in comparison to most of the guys around here, you’re the best one of the bunch.” Matthew chuckled throatily. “And I know I’m on Toni’s bad list…again…for what I did to you before, so I figured I’d make amends by asking you before she did. I can’t have her mad at me during the holidays.” He smiled widely.
“Da, that would not be good.” Peter said slowly, eyeing the larger student carefully. He fully expected it to be some cruel joke that Matthew had concocted to further protect his sister.
“So what do you say, Pete? You wanna come out? I make a pretty mean turkey.” A few blinks preceded the Russian’s next dazed statement.
“You are serious.”
“Yeah!” Matthew laughed. “Don’t worry, this isn’t some plotted scheme to scare you away from my sister, although seeing her first thing in the morning might do that anyways….” Peter was still not convinced. “Come on, Pete. It’ll be fun! Toni’ll spike the eggnog and then my parents’ll get drunk. You can’t beat that!”
“You are serious.” He said again. Matthew’s grin widened.
“Of course I am. You’re supposed to be happy on the holidays, and believe me, you’ll have a great time at our house.”
“I suppose that—“
“Great! I’ll go tell Toni and then we’ll call my parents. We’re catchin’ the bus Tuesday at noon, be ready for then!” With that, Matthew turned and left Peter stunned, still holding his half eaten and long forgotten sandwich.
