Name: Jake Sheppard
Codename: Maverick
Age: 35
Mutation:
NB: This section details Jake’s powers at the point at which he arrived at the Institute. It is possible that as he uses them more and in more complicated and challenging situations according to the demands of the job they will advance. Maybe.
Telepathy. Corporeally this functions on a relatively low level compared with the more powerful mutants the Institute is used to, although it is still sufficient to run Cerebro for short periods; specifically his abilities are telepathic communication, and a degree of surface telempathy similar in effect to mind-reading. Jake’s main skill lies in what he’s come to refer to as Astral Hitchhiking – a further form of telepathy which involves the projection of his consciousness into another in sort of mental piggy-back, by which he can gather a wider range of more detailed information than corporeal mind-reading including accessing memories. Usually he adopts the role of passive observer; although when the need arises he can manipulate the mind and body of the ‘host’ to a degree this takes immense concentration on his part and he has yet to master it, giving a high risk of unwitting damage to the host mind. His own physical form is also left vulnerable while he ‘hitches’ since he’s not really in there to react – although he retains a degree of awareness as to what is happening in order to control the physical form (which lapses into a sort of trance when hitching similar to that of an astrally projecting mystic) he has to withdraw from the host. It is possible that with further extensive training his powers could advance, but he’s not particularly anxious to attain a higher level of telepathy given how messily that tends to end.
Jake’s secondary ‘power’, possibly linked to the manipulative potential of telepathic powers, is Time Manipulation, though it should be stated that he does not manipulate time itself but rather his perception of it and that of anyone in physical contact with him at the moment he establishes the ‘bubble’ of slow/fast time. As with Telepathy he is reluctant to push this power too far, sticking to slowing and speeding his relative perception of time as the need arises. Attempts to stop time meet with mixed success, tend to send his powers ‘out of whack’ and leave him drained, and as for reversing time… far too risky.
Sidenote – For the purposes of comparison (based on movie and comic canon):
Xavier – mind reading, telepathic communication, erasure/creation/manipulation of thoughts and memories, mind control, induction of pain/paralysis/unconsciousness/death in others, astral projection, control of astral plain and other astral forms
Jean (not as Phoenix) – mind reading, telepathic communication, mind control, memory manipulation, astral projection, mental ‘stunning’. Also Telekinetic
Current Affiliation
Xavier Institute Faculty, as part of the three-person team attempting to fill the gap left by Xavier’s death. Aside from playing with the ‘shiny head-spinning helmet’ when the need arises, Jake’s content to leave the ‘unofficial’ school business to Logan and Ororo, focusing instead on the more academic and administrative aspects. Formerly resident at the Muir Institute until he was despatched to assist during the fallout from Alcatraz given as how the team didn’t have any sufficiently trained telepaths, or anyone with any clue how to handle those powers in the students.
What about Chuck? I hear you cry. Well, my dears, Jake doesn’t know Xavier’s back, since he left before he made his miraculous return and in any case it’s not something people are publicising. So far only Moira knows, since Chuck is ‘convalescing’ before making his return… if he ever returns. It’s possible his ‘death’ may well be the best thing for the team in bringing out Logan’s more domestic and co-operative side, advancing Ororo’s leadership skills, and generally giving the X-Men a great bucketload of motivation to do good ‘in honour of his legacy’…
