Name:
Antonia “Toni” Craft
Codename:
Fortress
Age:
21
Mutation:
Toni has a body comprised mainly of iron. Her iron composition has granted her both a few ‘gifts’ and a few weaknesses.
Standing at 6’ 1’’ and made of compressed iron, Toni weighs an impressive half-ton. This weight is due to iron that is infused into her skin, muscles and bones. This grants her substantial strength and physical endurance, able to lift one ton with minimal effort and the ability to withstand several standard bullets. Unfortunately, armour piercing rounds can and will hurt her.
As a result of her iron body, she needs to consume the metal on a regular basis in order for her body to function properly. She can absorb iron through physical contact, and can either pull it from its raw form, or siphon it out of another compound, such as steel (which is comprised of iron and carbon). She has to maintain her half-ton weight but she can survive at lower weights. Any weight below 250lbs causes Toni to enter a state of anaemic shock and her body begins to shut down unless the iron is restored. Her ability to absorb iron is consciously controlled, but if she becomes anaemic, her body will pull the iron from anything she comes in contact with, including plants, animals and people.
She has a limited amount of control over iron and her strongest manipulation ability is used to form full body armour. This armour is, essentially, a solidification of her skin but unlike Colossus, it is not smooth. Instead, it is rough and plate-like. In association, her physical strength and her endurance are both increased exponentially.
In accordance with her iron manipulation, she can also expel a relatively small amount of iron to create handheld weapons or tools, which can later be reabsorbed.
Toni possesses a severe phobia of water and avoids is at all costs. She considers it her greatest weakness, but she is also extremely susceptible to magnetic forces. Toni can also rust, which is one of two foundations of her intense water phobia and it is also the main reason behind her necessary iron absorption.
Toni also has the ability to tell the exact elemental composition of any metal she touches, a power which jump-started her interest in chemistry.
After all is said and done, Toni/Fortress is a Class 3 mutant.
Physical Description:
6’ 1’’, Caucasian, female, medium build, fair complexion, long red hair (usually tied back in a French braid). No freckles.
Personality:
Easy-going, fun, social, bold, and kind. She’s known for her outrageous practical jokes and her open minded nature. Has become a good friend to the older students at the Institute and is looked up to by younger ones. Despite the obvious disadvantages of weighing over 500lbs, Toni embraces her mutation and is not ashamed by it. She is extremely trustworthy and is always ready to give someone a chance. Toni has a surprisingly honest personality which sometimes gets her into trouble, as she is not afraid to speak her mind. She is not malicious in any way, and would rather hear all sides of the story before making any conclusions. She has an…eccentric personality and often makes strange, seemingly bizarre comments. Very few things actually bother her, and if they do, she often tries to make light of them. This usually ends up with her cracking some inappropriate joke.
She also has a pet boa constrictor named Hector. Her original roommate was none too fond of seven foot-long Hector, but the poor snake was eventually well liked by all students and staff at the institute.
Toni is obsessed with science, particularly chemistry and often over analyses both her own and others’ mutations. Fortunately for her, her analysis is usually correct. She even likes to give the different mutations names. She calls hers Ferrokinesis.
[To a certain extent, I modeled Toni personality after one of my favourite comic characters, Deadpool. If you are familiar with Deadpool, then you’ll notice that she often uses the phrase “Sphincter says what?” That, amoung a few other traits, is a tribute to the infamous black and red merc-with-a-mouth.]
Background:
Toni was born in Seattle, WA where she lived for a number of years. When she was six, her younger brother, Matthew Craft, was born. At the age of eleven, her family left for Dover, NJ when her father, a biologist, took another job. Her powers manifested at the age of 14, sending her into severe anaemic shock. Was taken to the hospital where a mutant doctor, Dr. Tobey Caine, discovered her mutant nature and was successfully able to treat her abnormal condition. He informed her of her mutant status, and also made his known to her (relatively strong telepathy and a retractable scales and webbing for swimming). She accepted the news of her mutantcy surprisingly well, and even opted to inform her parents and younger brother. Her family happily accepted her despite the fact that she was a mutant, and made every attempt to make sure that she continued a healthy normal life. Toni chose not to inform friends or other members of her family though, believing that with the growing mutant crises throughout the country and the world, they would all be put at risk. During this time, Toni did not develop any abnormal power, save for her iron absorption and her uncanny ability to elementally ‘read’ metal.
When she was 20, she was involved in and incident while waiting for a bus. Three young men began harassing both her and several other bystanders and when Toni tried to stand up to them, she was shot in the head. Fortunately enough, the first of two hidden powers emerged, causing her body to generate a thick layer of armour that protected her from the bullet. By all other standards, her iron skeleton would have protected her, but the reaction was involuntary and her self-protection instincts raised it without her knowledge. The shot, however, did succeed in knocking her unconscious which then led to her waking up in the hospital. Dr. Caine, who had remained a close friend to both Toni and her family, eagerly greeted and presented her with a series of photographs (taken by camera phones on location) of her body after she had taken the headshot. Dr. Caine altered the memories of the witnesses so that Toni’s secret was not publicly known.
At first, Toni did not believe the doctor’s claim of her armouring power, but she was quickly convinced. Dr. Caine recognized the potential threat of her new, untamed, powers and suggested that she look into the Xavier Institute. Toni brushed off the incident, believing it to be a one-time event, but not before making a deal with the doctor: if it
happened again, she would go to the institute. Dr. Caine agreed.
Only a matter of weeks later, Toni was running at her university’s track with a friend, when she stumbled and fell. The fall inadvertently triggered her armour for a second time, exposing herself to both her friend, and several others at the school. Without even getting up, Toni laid on the ground and called Dr. Caine to make arrangements for her transport to Xavier’s institute. She was aware—but was not bothered by the fact—that the people around knew she was a mutant.
She arrived at the institute a few days later, having opted to take her university courses via distance lessons. [Her arrival preceded the events of the first X-men movie.] Shortly after arriving, Toni began training so that she could control her armouring power and quickly realized that she also had the potential of siphoning the iron out of her skin and forming it into objects. Her armouring was relatively simply to control, but the second ability took far more practice.
Toni was working on her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in chemistry and a minor in biology when her powers surfaced. She hoped to use her degree to eventually become a teacher, and requested that she try teaching at the institute. The Professor agreed and allowed to work as a student teacher, aiding Jean Grey in her biology and chemistry classes and providing extra lessons to the students. After the apparent death of Jean, Toni took over the classes as the official teacher while the rest of the faculty searched for another teacher. Eventually, the staff offered Toni a permanent full-time position at the institute, despite her having not finished her degree. She accepted the offer but continued to work on her education degree.
[She was at the institute for the events of all three movies.]

[The following is a WIP excerpt from a fic I’m writing. Please note that my fic is a romance story between Piotr Rasputin (Colossus) and Toni. I have adjusted my character accordingly, and unless someone starts writing it into this RPG, she will not be showing any interest in Piotr. Also, this is strictly a dialogue, and no, I do not normally write this way.]
Kitty: What is your greatest regret?
Toni: I regret being so shy and secluded in grade school. I was always content being second and I always seemed to get teased a lot, but that was because I have a talent regarding my foot-in-mouth complex. But yeah, I used to be this little shy girl, and I wish I had been a lot more outgoing.
Kitty: It’s hard to imagine what you would have been like, all quiet-like.
Anyways, which talent would you most like to have?
Toni: I’d like to be swim again. That’s pretty much the only thing I would want. And Scott’s uncanny fashion sense. (laughs)
Kitty: Yes, he’s always been a good dresser.
Toni: Kitty, you’re always so sarcastic.
Kitty: Where would you like to live?
Toni: Doesn’t really matter. I’m pretty content where I am now.
Kitty: What is the quality you most like in a man?
Toni: He has to respect me as a person. I hate womanizers. I don’t need your protection, whether physical, financial, or whatever. I’m a stable woman. Actually, I’m a stable woman who can lift upwards of forty-thousand pounds. So, respect me and you won’t find your car skewered on the Empire State Building.
Kitty: Only you, Toni, would ever do that.
Toni: (smiles) I know.
Kitty: What is the quality you most like in a woman?
Toni: Be a go-getter. Don’t let the world come to you, sista’!
Kitty: I didn’t know you were such a feminist.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Toni: What the hell kind of word is deplore?
Kitty: It’s a synonym for criticize.
Toni: Ah. As I mentioned before, I have this case of serious Foot-in-Mouth disease. It’s this incredibly sarcastic sense of humor that comes out at the most inappropriate times. I kind of wish I didn’t have it, but it does make for some good laughs later.
Kitty: Yes, I’ve seen you use that against John a few times.
Toni: Only because he deserved it.
Kitty: What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Toni: Professionalism. And I won’t go into why; my reasoning is just far too absurd.
Kitty: Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Toni: (laughs) You know this one Kitty! Ahem…Sphincter says what?!
Kitty: Gross.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Toni: My weight. I know that it’s necessary for me to weigh five hundred pounds, but my god is it annoying. It’s like that scene in Jurassic Park when the T-Rex is about to show up and the ground shakes and the puddle jiggles a little. It’s like that all the time around me.
Kitty: It’s a wonder you haven’t broken more floor tiles already.
If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be?
Toni: A whale. Definitely a whale. I’m thinking sperm whale. That way I could do all the diving I want, and then duke it out with one of those big ass squids. It’s the epiphany of fun is you ask me.
Kitty: Epitome.
Toni: Sphincter says what?
Kitty: It’s epitome, not epiphany.
Toni: Same difference.
Kitty: Right…
What is your most prized possession?
Toni: My diving mask. Even though I can’t dive anymore, I love the thing. And my little Hector.
Kitty: How could we ever forget Hector?
Toni: Again with the sarcasm, Kitty. Hector’s a sweetie.
Kitty: Sure, when you’re around. I swear that snake eats my socks whenever you’re gone.
Toni: Are you sure that’s not the dryer? You know that there’s a portal inside the dryer, which then sucks your socks into another dimension to feed the sock-eaters of that world?
Kitty: ….
You’re very strange.
Toni: Indeed. Next question!
What is your motto?
Toni: All for the sake of science! And I live by that too.
