Name: Rahne (pronounced "Rain") Sinclair
Codename: She doesn't have one yet. "Wolfsbane" is comics-canon.
Age: Indeterminate; she seems to be in her mid-20s.
Mutation: Shapeshifting/lycanthropy
(( Not identical to comics-canon Wolfsbane, though inspired by her. Think of a Rahne a little more twisted by her upbringing, who never met Moira. ))
Rahne can alter her shape among three forms: her "normal" human form, a red wolf, and a canine/humanoid hybrid form. Her mass does not change during transition. It takes her very little effort to change forms -- in fact, she frequently does so without meaning to -- and none whatsoever to maintain a form once assumed.
In her human form she has no special abilities.
In her wolf form she has the ordinary capabilities of a wolf -- keen hearing and smell, quick reflexes, razor-sharp talons and fangs, exceptional endurance -- as well as strong animal instincts, which are sometimes an advantage and sometimes a liability.
Her hybrid form provides similar, though somewhat lessened, canine capabilities combined with the advantages of humanoid form (such as the ability to speak and use tools).
She sometimes changes only partly -- for example, a hand might turn into a furred paw, or vice-versa, while the rest of her body remains unchanged -- but has not learned to do so intentionally.
Rahne's mutation is actually significantly more sophisticated than it appears: she can in principle reform her body into that of any living thing she is familiar with. However, she is unaware of this and doesn't think about her ability in those terms; as far as she's concerned she's a werewolf. If she is left to her own devices it's very unlikely that her powers will develop further.
Physical Description:
In human form, she's a small Caucasian woman (5'1", 105 lbs) with a muscular gymnast's build, short reddish-brown hair, green eyes, and just a hint of freckles. Though plain-faced, she has a compelling smile, an infectious laugh, and an intense stare that makes it seem like nothing in the world matters except whatever it is she's concentrating on. However, when she is angry or upset -- which is often -- the smile and the laugh go away, and her stare goes from flattering to chilling.
In wolf form she's 2'5" at the shoulder, yellow-eyed, with reddish-brown fur and disturbingly large fangs that jut out slightly even when her jaw is closed. In hybrid form she's tall and lean (about 7' tall, though she's usually crouched so that eye-level is lower than that).
In wolf-form she is unable to speak; in hybrid-form her voice is deep and growly but intelligable. In human form she has an unremarkable speaking voice (though a heavy Highland accent) and a rather sweet singing voice.
Background:
Rahne was born and raised in the Northern Highlands of Scotland, in a village approximately twenty miles north of Inverness. She was orphaned at the age of three, when her parents and older siblings were killed by wolves in mid-winter. (It's likely that this early experience is why her shapeshifting ability has first manifested as lycanthropy.) The young girl survived (possibly thanks to early manifestation of her mutant ability, possibly by sheer good fortune) long enough to be rescued.
She was subsequently adopted by the Reverend Craig, the ultra-conservative -- not to mention narrow-minded and xenophobic -- Presbyterian/Calvinist elder of her village. Ten years later, when her power manifested, he declared her a tool of Satan and cast her out of the village. She lived in the wilderness around Inverness for years after that; she has no idea how long.
During that time, occassional sightings created a local werewolf legend, like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. About a year ago this brought an American hunter to Inverness after her; eventually he succeeded in trapping her. She was brought in her hybrid form to the U.S., sedated, and delivered to a private research lab in upstate New York.
Originally, the researchers thought they'd discovered a previously unknown hominid, some kind of ape with superficially canine characteristics. Genetic analysis quickly established that no, what they'd found was a human mutant, so they contacted the authorities and washed their hands of the situation.
Personality:
Rahne is a devoutly religious follower of the ultra-conservative Presbyterian/Calvinist tradition she was raised in; this colors a great deal of her worldview. Put simply, she believes that mankind's nature is essentially and iredeemably sinful and that salvation cannot be obtained through any human action or condition: God saves those he elects to save and damns the rest, and there's nothing anyone can do to change their condition. She does not consider herself one of the Elect; she considers herself damned beyond any hope of salvation.
Relatedly, she is something of an ascetic; she's averse to all forms of indulgence... alcohol, drugs, sex, fancy clothes, etc. This isn't a philosophical position so much as an inbred habit; the truth is that up to now she hasn't really had the opportunity to indulge. Future experience may change her habits in this regard. The only thing she does that she really enjoys is hunting worthwhile prey; she is bothered by the fact that she enjoys it but has thus far managed to live with the contradiction.
She is at core an angry and bitter young woman, eager to visit the suffering she was raised with a hundredfold on others. She doesn't think of herself this way, however, preferring to see herself the way Reverend Craig painted her: Satan's hunter, placed on Earth to dispatch the wicked. She's not a casual killer -- she respects the hunt and prefers challenging prey -- but she's a remorseless one, cold and merciless.
This doesn't necessarily make her unpleasant company... she can be friendly, generous, and even playful with those she trusts and likes. But there's always an angry edge underneath, which can burst out in displays of temper at the slightest provocation.
She is essentially uneducated by modern standards: illiterate, innumerate, utterly unfamiliar with technology or politics or, well, much of anything -- words like "mutant" and "gene" and "multinational corporation" don't mean much of anything to her. She's not at all stupid, but she has no patience for abstract topics. She does have an excellent memory, though -- she knows the Bible by heart, for example.
Current Affiliation:
Unaffiliated to start with; I'd like for the Brotherhood to recruit her... easiest would be for Primer to find out about the "crazy mutant werewolf girl" and go pick her up (either officially or unofficially).
Sample:
Rahne wakes up in a dimly-lit cage and, wary, remains immobile as she watches the white-coated men pace back and forth.
The last thing she remembers clearly is the clicking sound under her carelessly-placed hindpaw and a cloud of noxious gas streaming from under the ground. After that, everything is a burning-eyed, semi-conscious haze... nets tangling her, the sound of some kind of air-gun, darts burying themselves in her fur. After that, darkness.
Her head still pounds, and her muscles are sore, and her throat is parched; it feels like she's been asleep for days. She's nowhere she recognizes; everything smells of antisceptic and strange chemicals, like the doctor's hut backhome in her old village. Has she been sick, then?
One of the doctors is talking on the telephone, and she listens carefully... his accent is strange, but intelligable. "No, no... it's useless for our purposes, really. Fully human... or, well, mutant, but if we wanted to study that we could just put an ad out on Craig's List... yes, that's right... exactly... well, how should I know? Maybe the police, or that freaky anti-terrorist unit, you know, the guy with the wings and the white-haired black lady... yeah, yeah, fine. I'll be here."
He hangs up, and she considers the side of the conversation she overheard. "mutant"? "Craig's list?" "guy with the wings?" "black lady?" It all tantalizingly hovers on the edge of sense, but really she has no idea what's going on. What she does know is that these people have hunted her down, trapped her, drugged her, caged her, and are now discussing her fate.
The less she gives away, the better, she decides. If they think she's still unconscious, they will be less wary around her. They might open her cage, or leave her alone to break out of it herself. She allows herself a small, predatory smile at the thought... they only need to make one mistake, and she'll make sure it's their last.
