Name:
Randall (Rand) O'Neill
Codename:
Black Rook
Age:
25
Mutation:
Innate Probability Manipulation, Psionic Weapon Creation, Ancestor's Insight.
IPM- He inadvertently manipulates probability fields in his favor. This ability is extremely random and unpredictable. He never knows when his luck is 'in' or out. When his luck is 'in' he is virtually unbeatable in games of chance and the odds are always in his favor.
Psionic Weapon Creation- Rand has the ability to tap in to psionic energies and create weapons using this energy. The physical manifestation of these weapons are blinding white light, tinged with a dark violet or blue. To him, the weapons create a slight warming sensation when he is in contact with them. The heat is actually pretty intense at the level in which he feels this warmth. At the weaker levels of his weapons, the victim merely 'believes' that they have been harmed, this feeling is created as the psionic blades short circuit the victim's nervous system, creating the sensation of pain. At higher levels, the weapons 'actually' create physical damage such as cuts, gashes, punctures, etc. The harming effects of his blades are basically both physical and mental. For example, if he were to drive a low grade blade into a victim's head, he could create long lasting mental/psyche damage.
Ancestor's Insight- Rand has the memories of about 1500 years of his male ancestors. His power was catalyzed when, as a child, he was hung by his father. The gaps in his memory, created by lack of oxygen, were filled over the span of a year by memories that weren't his. He mostly remembers important events that happened in one's life, events that would never be forgotten such as battles. Rand has the knowledge of these men, and is actually very smart. Due to this aspect of his mutation, he remembers battle techniques, fighting styles, lore, and languages (both dead and active).
Physical Description:
Rand has a lean, wiry body. He isn't naturally strong, but pretty agile. He is about 5'11, 180 pounds. Rand has brown hair and green eyes, and is considered very handsome. He wears a dark blue, olden time, keeping with Hellfire tradition, coat with golden spider webs or silver ravens lacing the cuffs and collar. He also wears a scarf or something else around his neck, hiding the marks which are on it. (See Background Info) He is very agile and nimble, possessing natural grace.
Personality:
He always looks at the glass as half full instead of half empty, and he sees the good in every situation. Rand sees humor in the darkest situations, and tries his very best at everything he attempts. He's a natural survivor, never a quitter. Loyalty is important to him, along with reputation. He'll never do anything to spite someone, that is just not who he is. When friends need help, he'll try his best. He's a bit stubborn, mule headed. This tends to get him in trouble, more so in the past when he was a kid. Rand sometimes makes rash decisions that lead to causing more harm than good. But, he has a good heart, and his intentions are noble. He has his conflicts, and he usually hides his problems, letting them burrow and fester, so that a small problem grows into a demon. But, that's just the way he is. He views himself in a good light, and is often confident in his abilities as a mutant. Rand would do almost anything to accomplish his goals, but, other people come first usually for him. He'd rather solve problems like a civilized man, rather than use force to achieve his goals.
Background:
Randall O'Neill was born to a struggling couple, Randall Sr., and his wife Elaine. Things would only get worse as Elaine fought a losing battle to cancer, leaving Rand motherless at the age of four. She left behind four children, three sons and a daughter. Randall Sr. would never get over the loss of his lover, and slowly he sank into a deep, drunken depression. He drowned his pain in alcohol and as the months went on, began having sleepovers with women that his children had never seen before. Their living conditions were unsanitary to say the least.
Finally, one fateful night, an enraged, drunken Rand Sr. stumbled into his filthy house. Rand, who was twelve at the time, and used to his fathers' behavior, had finally had enough. He demanded to know how his father could treat his children like he did, goading him until finally Rand Sr. snapped. The police, who had been called by neighbors, found Rand Jr. hanging from the balcony of the cramped two story house. His father was sobbing in the corner, too drunk to move. The police and EMTs franctically worked to revive the unconscious, now blue Rand.
Somehow, he survived his ordeal, but he would be scarred both mentally and physically for life. He wears a silk scarf to hide the scars that he bears from his father. Child services took Rand and his siblings away from their abusive father, who was sentenced to ten years in prison, and went to live with their grandparents. During his ordeal, Rand had been deprived of oxygen so long that he had suffered sufficient memory loss. Troubled, his grandparents took him to the therapy to deal with extreme migraines as memories that weren't his flooded into his mind. The doctors didn't know what to make of it, finally blaming it on the mutant phenomenon/problem.
The rest of his abilities surfaced over the next five years, namely his psionic weapon creation and trademarked 'good luck'. He was referred to Charles Xavier by many of his doctors. Under his guidance, Rand came to master his ability and left the Institute after graduating with honors. He was deeply saddened by Xavier's death and by his former classmates, Jean Grey and Scott Summers. After leaving the school, Rand had planned to go into Law. Months before he was to start class, he recieved a letter from an infamous club. . . The Hellfire Club to be exact. For, it seemed that Rand's grandfather from his mother's side had been a member of this Club, and he, being the eldest remaining survivor of his line, was invited to join the club.
Little did he know that the Hellfire Club was actually run by a group of mutants, The Inner Circle. Emma Frost, the White Queen, known for her notoriety as a powerful telepath, learned of Rand's mutation and invited him into the Inner Circle. Willingly, Rand accepted and became the Black Rook. He is an emmisary to both the X-Men and the Brotherhood, and will often be seen with both sides. He currently resides at a Hellfire Manor in New York.

Where did that come from? Rand didn't know. It had just popped into his head a second ago. It was a catchy little phrase wasn't it? Kind of prophetic, kind of cryptic. He liked it though, it had a nice little ring to it.
A soft wind stirred the leaves on the sidewalk, making a rustling sound, breaking him out of his little trance. Hopefully he hadn't spewed out some gibberish in public. He had a habit of doing that sometimes. He shivered as the cool air blew harder this time. Rand pulled his scarf a little tighter over his neck, his dark blue coat was already buttoned all the way up.
As he walked, he often got stares from passerbys. It didn't bother him though, he had no care for what they thought. He liked the way he dressed, an olden style, a fashion worn by the Inner Circle of the notorious Hellfire Club. Eighteenth century...a good century he recalled. Or rather, his ancestor recollected.
He smiled to himself as he continued his stroll down the street. Rand really didn't know where he was going, he just wanted to get out of the Manor. The mutant stopped as he got a familiar feeling in his gut. Something wasn't right. Probability of something trouble. High.
Great. He turned to find a gang of menacing twenty somethings walking toward him. To them, he probably looked like some wealthy aristocrat strolling, looking for something to buy. The leader couldn't have been a day past twenty three. Grimacing, Rand prepared for what his gut told him.
He was right, his gut was always right. Dozens of fighting techniques flashed through his head. Experiences flooded his skull. For once, he ignored them. Simple telekinesis would suffice. Standing there, he waited. The gang formed a circle around him, jeering him, taunting him. He sighed as they told him what was coming.
Money. A piece of paper or metal worth a said price. Rand had to chuckle as they explained to him that first they would take his money, and then they would take him. They rushed, and instinct took over.
Some met psionic walls and pillars, others clutched body parts as psionic knives sped through the air. Calmly, he directed his powers to do as he wished. Within a few moments, the menacing gang was nothing more than a few unconscious men lying in the street. The rest had fled, screaming "mutie" into the autumn evening.
Shrugging, he dragged the KO'ed gangsters into a nearby alleyway and proceeded with his afternoon stroll.

Powers:
Rand's powers are evolving at a slow rate. Soon, Rand will be able to create concussive blasts of psionic energy, not just blades and such. Normally, this would be probably considered a good thing for a member of the power hungry Hellfire Club, but sadly, it is not. The trauma that Rand underwent as a young child has come back to bite him yet again. Due to his hanging, he had sufficient memory loss, and now, years later...it has affected his psionic ability to create weapons. Each time Rand uses his primary power, a chemical is released into the body, similar to adrenaline. This chemical creates a feeling of strength and greater awareness, even slight euphoria...which makes it slightly addicting. What's so bad about this you say? Well, due to the trauma he suffered to his brain, the chemical has been a bit....tampered with. Along with all of the euphoria the chemical creates an equal feeling of nausea. As time goes on, Rand will begin to have trouble controlling his powers, it will feel like a battle between molten hot fire and chilling cold. Eventually, his mutation will cause him to go horribly insane and the chemical that is released when his powers become active has an unknown poison in it's makeup...which means that Rand's powers are slowly eating away at soft tissue, and thus...slowly killing him. But don't worry, this won't be any time soon.....
Personality:
Rand is also developing Dissociative Identity Disorder, better known as Multiple Personalities. DID is caused by trauma as a child, whether it be physical, sexual, or emotional trauma. About 99% of DID sufferers were traumatized at an important stage in their development. In Rand's case of the disorder, his alternate identities are the identities of his ancestors, through their memories. Stress causes the transition between these alternates, but don't worry, our boy Rand isn't that much different than his ancestors, so his behavior won't change very much. But, don't be surprised if he doesn't answer to Rand the first time you call his name.
