Name: Hector Vidal
Codename: Doesn't have one. If he ever does, it will likely be "Vital"
Age: 15 (born June 20, 1992) He's in 9th grade.
Mutation: Life-force manipulation.
Hector can perceive and control the energy that animates living things.
Right now, he has very little control over his ability; it manifests in the following ways:
There are other manifestations of his ability that will emerge over time, and he will eventually learn to control the above.
Hector's ability is not perceivable by normal senses -- there's no visible effect or anything like that -- but some individuals are somewhat sensitive to it; they tend to "get the willies" around him.
Physical Description:
Hector is a fairly average-looking Hispanic teenager. He's a bit on the stocky side (5'7", 150 lbs, broad shoulders), but has relatively little body fat (he does a lot of running). Light brown skin, black hair, dark brown eyes. Not much facial or body hair. He keeps his hair at medium-length, parted on the right.
Personality:
The most immediately noticable thing about Hector is that he's almost always cheerful. Not necessarily friendly, but cheerful; he's usually having a really good day unless something specifically bad is happening right that minute. Of course, his mutation has a lot to do with that; he's probably the only kid in the world who became less moody at puberty.
He's outgoing, energetic, the life of the party; the opposite of shy; always up for doing something, especially if its fun. He prefers to spend time with people, especially large crowds. (In part this is a side-effect of his mutation; all that life-energy in one place charges him up.)
He can come off as something of a slacker, but it's not really true... he gets his work done. The thing is, he doesn't sleep and never gets tired, so he generally gets it done in the middle of the night when everyone else is asleep, which leaves him with a lot of free time. Also, while he's not dumb, he's really not an intellectual/analytical type.
He's fairly self-confident -- a little arrogant, even -- and doesn't worry too much about things, figuring that he'll deal when the time comes to deal. He has no idea what he wants to be when he grows up.
He enjoys performing arts and isn't a half-bad actor. He's taken some voice training and can carry a tune but will never be a great singer. He's pretty good at stage magic and a remarkably good juggler.
He likes animals, especially dogs. He's always wanted a dog, but his parents have refused, since they live in a Manhattan apartment.
Background:
Hector is a first-generation American citizen; his parents immigrated from Argentina in 1989. He speaks Spanish, but with a pronounced American accent.
Nothing much of interest has happened to him so far. His family is comfortably middle-class; they live in a Manhattan apartment and are looking to move to the suburbs one of these days. His father is a middle manager for a local bank; his mother teaches history at the same private school he attends.
His mutant abilities have been manifesting for about six months now, slowly getting stronger, but he hasn't really realized he's a mutant. He hasn't slept in about two months, which he hasn't told his parents about yet, which is pretty weird. He still eats regularly, but he's become aware that he never gets hungry. He gets weird vibes off of people, and sometimes he's sure there's rats in the walls or whatever, but he's been shrugging that off. For the last month or so, inanimate objects have been doing things around him, but he has no idea why it's happening or that he's in any way responsible.
Current Affiliation: Unaffiliated. He's a high-school student in Manhattan. I'm not sure where he'll end up... initially, I'm thinking he'll hang out with both groups trying to make up his mind.

Mutation: Life-force manipulation.
Hector can perceive and control the energy that animates living things.
Right now, he has very little control over his ability; it manifests in the following ways:
- Life-force perception - Hector can sense living things within about fifty feet of him. Currently it's a diffuse awareness, somewhat like a sense of smell. If they're close enough, he can sometimes establish things like their state of health, fatigue, etc.
- Superhuman vitality - Hector channels life-force through his body instinctively. As a consequence he doesn't have to sleep or eat, never gets tired (he can sprint indefinitely, for example), never gets sick, and heals injuries at superhuman rates.
- "Supercharge" others - Hector can charge up other living things with life-force, thereby granting them (temporarily) the same superhuman vitality he enjoys.
This happens automatically whenever he touches anyone, and sometimes even from a distance if he's paying a lot of attention to someone. This doesn't require flesh-to-flesh contact; it works through cloth, etc. The effect lasts for as long as contact is maintained. He has no control over it.
There are no particular negative consequences to this... quite the contrary, it improves health and is an enjoyable experience, even mildly euphoric. Kinda like your first cup of coffee in the morning, except much more so. - Drain vitality - Hector can drain the life-force from living things, weakening or even killing them. He has no conscious control over this whatsoever; however, it happens more often when he is angry or frightened. As with his "supercharge" ability, this usually requires touch (though not flesh-to-flesh contact) but sometimes happens from a distance.
The effect is extremely unpleasant to the target, though not actually painful (more like extreme fatigue, nausea, malaise) and extremely pleasant for Hector himself. - Animate objects - Hector can charge up inanimate objects with life-force, thereby granting them (temporarily) the ability to move around autonomously.
He has no subsequent connection to, or control over, the object; this is not telekinesis of any sort. However, the object's behavior (hostile, friendly, curious, etc.) is largely determined by his state of mind at the time of animation. The object is not intelligent in any meaningful way, although it is capable of goal-directed action.
The object remains animated for a period of time depending on how much energy he charges it up with. If he uses too much energy, he can tire himself out temporarily.
This ability is completely outside his control; it just happens sometimes. Usually, he's not even aware that he's responsible.
There are other manifestations of his ability that will emerge over time, and he will eventually learn to control the above.
