Name:
Amara Milano Penrose
Codename:
Penumbra
Age:
28 (September 13, 1980)
Mutation:
Major Umbrakinesis—has the ability to create shadows or even darkness itself. Can also dematerialize, create solid forms, and travel by this dimension. Minor Telekinesis—limited for her to only moving small objects (such as weapons under ten pounds like knives and razors; keys, small pieces of rubble, wallets, etc) over short distances and bending certain projectiles that would normally be impossible to see, but not merely as far as blocking them or sending them back where they came from. Can also use in junction with her Umbrakinesis to move objects via shadow.
Physical Description:
She is 5"8 and weighs 130 pounds with an hourglass build, raven-black hair and narrow, deep set eyes that are always observant. Most people describe her strikingly attractive and her accent, similar to the accent spoken in rural Oxfordshire, (at times segueing into Nelson, Lancashire Northern English) as both charming and persuasive.
Personality:
Intelligent, calculating and oftentimes mysterious, Amara is usually reserved about her past and rarely smiles, but when she does, it’s almost a carbon copy of the Mona Lisa—often enigmatic. She is musically inclined playing the violin and enjoys listening to dark classical music.
Strengths: She isn't afraid to speak what's on her mind with precision or giive criticism when necessary, which she's also able to take (constructive or otherwise). She can tolerate conflicting situations quite well, taking such in stride showing little or no emotion.
Likes: Amara likes to be accurate with information, which she usually is. She takes pleasure in being service to others and is more comfortable with routine, resistant to change. Reading, writing, and watching television (sometimes not in that order) is some of the other activities that fill her time when she isn't busy.
She likes hanging around optimistic, fun-loving people, but they may get on her nerves if they're too enthusiastic. She can deal with most people, but she really connects with those who share her interest and perspectives. She is quite fond of knickerbocker glory, an elaborate ice cream sundae served in a tall glass.
Dislikes: Amara hates being told things at the last minute. Steady change and variety are two things she is resistant to and she will vocalize this.
Abilities:
Aside from being a mutant, Amara is self-taught in the mystical arts and her knowledge of arcane lore is quite extensive. She is a capable fighter and can hold her own in combat. A master of stealth and espionage, she can be an effective assassin should the situation call for her to be one. A polyglot, she fluently speaks Russian, German, Italian and Latin (to some extent).
Background:
The third youngest daughter to Ethan and Meredith Penrose, Amara was born in Northamptonshire, England in Harpole, a village four miles west of Northampton, along with her two older sisters, Minerva and Guinevere. Her little sister, Shelly, was born in Romford, London Borough of Havering, England, and Victoria a few months after.
Amara spent most of her early childhood in Harpole, yet was raised the rest of her life in Germany, Russia, Italy, and then the United States before eventually returning back home. Her father was originally from Germany, and holds dual citizenship in Russia, while her mother was born in Italy. Confusing? Amara thought so, too, which was reason enough for her pilgrimage to these countries. Yet, throughout this excursion, Amara managed to hide her newfound knowledge of her umbrakinesis abilities from her parents. How she acquired her magic powers are stranger still.
When she turned 15, she discovered she could bend off protons to create shadows or even total darkness. Later on, she developed the ability to move small objects with only a mere thought. While not nearly as strong as her primary power, this new ability also limited to her to bending certain projectiles.
A phone conversation with her elder sisters on university life quickly turned into her telling them of her strange talents. While they were marveled at this, they weren't surprised. Minerva revealed her Telekinesis and Regeneration gifts while Guinevere ended up with Mind Control and Healing powers. It was only a moment of time, they would tell her, before Shelly and Victoria will manifest their own powers.
One day, the townspeople were out and about the village square when suddenly it became night prematurely, the sun disappearing in a mist of total darkness. This phenomenon frightened the villagers who wondered what "act of God" this could possibly mean. As they would later find out, divine inspiration was not responsible for what was about to happen.
Her parents, among the villagers, were truly frightened, and, before this event occurred were in search for their daughter. Then, suddenly, descending from the overcast sky, a figure came through the billows. As the people awed this sight in quiet terror, they realized the being remained stationary, floating, while its eyes glanced at two people apathetically, an almost bored look, before revealing itself.
The townspeople and Amara's parents were flabbergasted in seeing the vast powers their daughter possessed. Awe soon turned to outrage as the villagers began to form a mob. Her parents, powerless and trapped in the crowd, could do nothing to change their minds as Northampton police arrived on the scene. When the riot became physical, Amara, realizing that fighting them was pointless, disappeared, never to be heard from again. The sun peaked out from behind the clouds as the darkness departed, leaving the police just as baffled as the villagers.
For the next few weeks, the phenomenon spread throughout the village, as her parents were soon questioned by the local authorities. Years would pass before the whole affair was forgotten and people returned to their daily living. Yet for Amara's parents, the event would forever remain with them; they were devastated that she'd had not told them of her extraordinary gifts, and now with Minerva and Guinevere at university, Shelly had lost a sister whom she looked up to, now finding herself as the only child.
In reality, the Penrose's daughter found herself traveling across England, searching for a purpose in life. As a magic-based mutant as she later found out, there was no hope in finding anything worthwhile in terms of employment. Human-mutant relations were on shaky ground, and the outlook didn't look too favorable for it to change anytime soon. She thought of going back to the States to stay with her relatives, but relations over there were spiraling out of control, and she'd want nothing to do with that.
Unlike most mutants who at first experience their powers only to freak out when it flared out of control, Amara wasn't too worried. She'd only used her powers as a unique self-defense mechanism when threatened or if she wanted something or someplace to shield her from the elements. Her trip lasted for nine years before she settled in London.
Tired, depressed, and angry at the world, Amara realized she could run no more. Four years in London were met with mixed results as she bounced from one odd job to the next, which always ended up the same—things went well early on, but her managers would find out that she got through her tasks by "magical" means. Despite this, she had more than enough money saved up to at least own a flat and afford other pleasures to cater her whims.
She next headed for the University of Bristol, where she had a dual major in Accounting/Finance and Italian, and a minor in Philosophy. During that time, and afterwards, she experimented further with her powers to get a better understanding of what they could do.

Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night…
"Amara! Amara, wake up! Amara--"
"I will if you stop shaking me!" Amara slowly opens her eyes; the first sight was of her younger sister. Then reality hits her.
"Oh, God!" she said holding her nose, "It smells like a morgue down here!" Then she remembered. It had been hours before that she and her sister took refuge in the city's foul sewer to escape capture from a radical group whose aim is to eliminate mutants.
"How long have I've been sleeping?" Amara asked, her eyes now adjusting to the darkness.
"Two hours, I think." Her sister then began to shiver violently. "Amara, are we going to be living like sewer rats down here? I'm cold!"
"Where's your jacket?"
"In the car. I wasn't able to get it because we were being shot at, remember?"
Amara sighed. It was one thing having her car totaled; it was another to have her sister now turning to her for warmth.
"Here," she said, handing over her trench coat. "Better you with the jacket than me."
She took it, placing the coat over her shoulders.
Amara couldn't help but realize the sacrifice she'd taken by abducting her sister, but the price was worth it. Oh, was it worth it. So much so that she swerved through ongoing traffic. But at each turn, two sedans always appeared through the rear view mirror. Now, realizing it was a chase, Amara tried her best to escape them, but they were with her at every corner.
When it appeared she lost them in an empty alleyway, one of the sedans came from the other direction and rammed them, sending the car spinning out of control and hitting several streetlights. When they got out of the car and began running, they looked back to see the car in smokes, then burst into flames.
The pursuers got out of the car and began running after them firing gunshots all the while. Which is how Amara managed to find their current sanctuary in the sewers. For the amount of time and freedom this bought them, they were glad. But something told her it was not to last.
"Come on, we have to keep moving," she said. As they walked the platform, she noticed the garbage that littered the area and other things that were detestable for Amara's taste: ooze, feces, and worst of all, the rotten flesh of shrews, sewer rats, and snakes.
"I can't imagine how anyone could stand to live in a place like this," she muttered to herself. Shelly? Shelly?" Amara stops, looks around, but saw no one. She groaned. Suddenly, her eyes took on a pale gold glow as she began to use her umbrakinesis powers. Within seconds, Amara transformed herself into living shadow. She then melds into thin air.
Shelly appears from behind a low wall. Smiling to herself, she said, "I think I lost her." She walks down the corridor, whistling to herself, but was unaware that she was being watched. Amara appears several feet behind her. "You might want to think again." The sudden sound of her sister's voice had her turn around in shock.
"Shelly, this is no time for hide-and-seek," said Amara, now crossed. "Don't you realize how much danger we're in? We still have to find a way out of here."
"Well, we better start to pick up the pace," said Shelly. "They're here..."
"What? Who's here?"
"The people from before…."
"What?" Amara had a concerned look on her face. "How the hell did they find us? Where are they now?"
"I can hear their stray thoughts from above us. They're thinking of organizing into two groups," Shelly reported. "The first group is above the manhole..."
"And the second group..." Amara didn't need to finish her sentence because they heard the sound of footsteps and the beam of flashlights cascading the area.
That's when someone yelled, "Hey! I think I heard some voices down here. Let's go!" Suddenly, three gunmen rushed in from around the corner and aimed their weapons. A woman stepped from among them with a smile on her face.
"At last, I've found you," she said. "But really, I do tire of this cat-and-mouse game. Surrender quietly and we promise the Society will make your death quick and painless for your crime."
Shelly looks at her, confused. "What? Crime? What crime?"
"The crime of being a mutant!"
The woman points at them, which also served as a gesture for the men to take aim. "Kill them." They opened fire, causing the two to dive for opposite ends of the platform. With bullets whizzing between them, the pair ran for the nearest corridor.
"Is it just me, or is this night really starting to become very bothersome?"
"Depends on who you ask," Shelly answered. "Remind me again why I was taken away in the middle of the night?"
"Now is not the time." Amara dodged a bullet meant for her. It hit a wielding pipe instead, leaving a dent and releasing a mist of steam that temporarily halted the chase. They managed to get past this distraction and continued with the pursuit. Suddenly, the area shook as a mighty noise came from the gateway.
"Do you here that?"
"Here what, Amara?"
"Something that's not what I think it is." Like a thundering herd, a tidal wave of sewage water came at them. Within seconds, they are swamped by the streaming water.
The gunmen and their leader swam towards them in hot pursuit. They caught up to them, but Amara managed to repel them with her shadow powers. Finding a side corridor, they swam towards it, only to realize it led to a dead end.
"Your journey ends here!" the woman said, rushing towards Amara.
"Shelly, get out of here!" Amara ordered.
The woman got her hands across Amara's throat, trying to choke her, but she manages to kick away to escape. She retaliated by punching her, but the woman dodged the blow and drove Amara into the nearest wall. The impact causing her to wince in pain and pass out.
Gasping for air, the woman and her henchmen turned for Shelly, who was having difficulty removing the hatch.
"Hey! Let go of me, you creep!" Shelly saw that one of the gunmen had grabbed a hold of her leg. She reaches for the barrette in her hair. Charging it with kinetic energy, she throws it with such force that it blinds him, releasing the grip.
When she didn't see her sister with her, Shelly turned around to find her, only to see that she was just coming to. She swam for the woman who took out her gun to fire at Shelly.
She then realized that her gun was forcibly trying to leave her hand.
"I don't know what your problem is, lady, but we didn't start it!" Amara turns her around and drove a pocketknife through her shoulder. The woman screams in pain as the sewage was filtered with blood. Finding the pathway towards the escape route, the sisters found their way up the manhole, leading towards the cold air. When they reached the surface, they glanced at the woman, now one with the stream of water, followed by the gunmen who drowned with her.
Replacing the manhole cover that led to the sewer, the pair trudged over to the curb of the street.
"That was not fun," said Amara, between breaths. "Are you all right?"
Shelly said nothing. "I nearly got shot at, fought for my life down a foul sewer, and I lost my favorite barrette-all in one night! Do I look 'all right' to you?!" she screamed. "Is this what you invited me into when you kidnapped me?! Huh?!" She joins Amara sitting down, still traumatized that for the next several months, she would smell like a living toilet.
Amara could not answer. She was still wondering that question herself.
"Can we go home now? I'm tired. And I've had enough trauma to leave me scarred for life!"
Amara got up and gave a small laugh. "My naive, little sister." She laughed again as she removed the dead skin of a snake caught in her hair. "There is no home to go to. We only have the night--and each other-to depend on now." She held out her hand as she pulled Shelly up. To her surprise, her younger sister smiled as she hugged her. Amara stroks her hair as she looked up.
With the moon cascading over them, the pair began to walk away from their latest ordeal; an ordeal that would remain and change their lives forever. Only that, it was far from over. The first group watched from their vehicles for a few minutes before driving off into the night.
