Codename: DARKSTAR
Name: Laynia Petrovna
Age: 17
Nationality: Russian (Adopted by Americans at a young age and brought to America)
Powers: Psionic darkforce Manipulation:
Laynia is capable, through an inherent psionic link to the Darkforce Dimension (the dimension that Nightcrawler travels through when he teleports, and the same dimension that powers Nightcrawler's daughter's hex-balls) she can manifest Darkforce energy as either matter or energy.
Her control over this power is not something that she can boast
about, as she had been told, by Professor X before he died, that she was FAR from reaching her potential, though when experiencing powerful emotions she gets a "power boost" (like most mutants) which brings her closer to her true potential, though she has very little control and her power usually works on rash impulse during the emotional "boost".
She can, so far, use her powers in a number of ways, such as creating things like balls, walls, columns, spikes and other simple shapes that are nearly as dense as steel, the strength of the construct depending on her level of concentration.
She can also manifest the energy as concussive blasts, capable of knocking an average person back by about 15-20 feet when at her best.
She, on very very few occasions, has shown potential for flight, and once teleportation, though she is far from being able to control those abilities (which means that unless in an EXTREME circumstance, they probably wont appear on the boards)
Physical Description:
Laynia is 5'10" tall, of a slender build. She has shoulder-length blond hair, Grey eyes and tends to slouch, looking smaller than she really is.
Laynia has rosy cheeks and a small nose, she refuses to get ANY piercings but is considering getting a tattoo later on in life.
Laynia has long legs, but weak ankles, due to several roller blading incidents when she was younger, so she can easily be swept off of her feet if she doesn't shield herself.
Laynia's teeth are all straight, except for one for her left incisor, which is slightly bent (also due to roller blading... needless to say, she wasn't very good at it).
Laynia has small breasts (yeah, being gay this part feels kinda weird to write lol) which she CONSTANTLY wishes were bigger, she just about fills out an A-Cup and this adds further to her insecurities, making her think that no boy will ever like a girl with barely any chest.
She tends to mainly dress in tight, black clothes, making sure that if there's ever a time where she feels too shy, she can just retreat into a corner and blend into the shadows, and also making sure that the clothes are tight enough that if she DID want to be noticed the clothes were tight enough to show people the body that she slaved to uphold.
Personality Profile:
Laynia is shy, yet passionate about certain things. She is easily intimidated in social situations, though she opens up to people once she starts to feel comfortable around them.
She has few friends, but has high regard for those friends she DOES have.
Laynia appears to be cold and distant, strong and untrusting, though this couldn't be farther from the truth, her shyness and insecurities smother her and stop her from being herself, so she puts on the tough facade to try keep herself from getting hurt, she is also vulnerable in the sense that she instantly puts complete trust in people if she thinks that they might understand her and who she really is.
Laynia is EXTREMELY insecure about the way she looks. She is constantly trying to look "pretty" and appealing, hoping that people will like her for it, though she has an extremely distorted self image, seeing herself as "fat" and "ugly". This has led to near-eating-disordered behavior, of which she never speaks about.
Laynia is ashamed to be a mutant, which is why she loves the Academy, as there are no "normal" people who can make her feel bad about her powers. Her insecurities and the value she places in other people's opinions drives her to hide her mutation from all non-mutants, fearing rejection and hatred.
While Laynia is shy and withdrawn, she becomes feral and single minded in a fight, focusing all of her negative emotions into beating the enemy and controlling her powers.
Background:
Laynia's parents (Tatiana and Piotr Petrovna) were Soldiers in the USSR in Russia, and were killed in action when Laynia was only a year old, she was then put up for adoption by her Aunt (Nadia Petrovna) who felt unable to care for a child, and was adopted by an American couple who were doing Sociological Research in Minsk at the time.
Laynia was taken to America with her new parents (Thomas and Hilary Jameson), though they wanted her to keep her birth name, always being open with Laynia about her adoption and her parents' devotion and loyalty to their country.
Laynia had a fairly typical childhood, learning basic Russian as per her adoptive parents' request. Laynia and her parents lived in a Connecticut suburb, which had neat lawns, quiet neighbors and was the embodiment of complete normalcy.
Her parents tried to hide her from the Mutant Controversy which seemed to be sweeping the country, trying to uphold open minds while instilling it in their daughter, though, when Laynia was 13, she manifested her powers. She had been having a heated argument with one of her friends in her bedroom, on the first floor, her parents hears the girls shouting and began to make their way upstairs to try and calm them down, fighting about a boy that they both liked, and Laynia threw up her hands in frustration, and a wisp of Darkforce energy erupted from her and hit her friend in the chest, sending her slamming into the opposite wall. It was at that moment that Laynia's parents reached the open door, and watched in horror as their daughter became a "dangerous mutie" like they saw on the news.
Laynia's friend was taken to hospital, having suffered a minor concussion and bruises on her back, from when she had hit the wall, and Laynia's parents decided to move to escape the shame of the whole ordeal and try to make a fresh start.
After 2 and a half years of moving around, trying to escape the questions raised when Laynia's powers manifested themselves in public (most often than not in harmless ways) they decided that they could just not handle it, and were considering putting her in foster care. This is when the Academy, with Their marvelous timing, sent Ororo and Scott Summers to talk to Laynia's parents, telling them about the institute. Her parents, who had been wracked with guilt over their decision to put Laynia into foster-care, jumped at the chance to do what they thought was the right thing, and sent Laynia to the Institute, paying the fees, though feeling unable to ever actually see her again. Their guilt over not being able to care for Laynia properly was greater than their love for her, so they thought it best that they just send the cheques, and a Birthday card every year, and move on with their lives.
Laynia found it difficult to make friends at the institute, and was never particularly noticeable, until one day the Professor decided to test Laynia's powers (by then she had been able to make basic constructs, such as cubes or spheres) and told Laynia that, with help, she could reach her true potential and be a level 4 Mutant.
He then put her in a training program, making her one of the "Junior X-Men".
(Whether she still is, now that the school is under new management, is up to the admin)
Current Affiliation: Xavier Institute Student
Sample Post:
Laynia was sitting on her bed, watching the rain beat down against her window, listening to the howl of the wind and the crash of thunder, she loved watching storms from the safety of the indoors, they calmed her, made her less nervous, distracted her.
Laynia found herself lost in the storm, trying to hear every patter against the window (she was, quite obviously, unsuccessful). She sat there a while, she didn't know how long for, she didn't particularly care either.
Eventually, she eased herself back into reality, taking in the details of her room, she took a deep breath and drew her knees to her chest, feeling the cold. She looked at the knob of the thermostat, not wanting to get up. She took a deep breath and concentrated, the light seemed to bend near the knob, and darkness, seemingly liquid shadow, formed itself into a ring, she focused and it contracted, tightening around the knob, she took a deep breath, got used to the feel of the darkforce ring, an extension of herself, and proceeded to turn it, she turned it to what she thought would be a warm enough temperature and let it go, releasing the ring with her mind. It seemed to whither and disappear.
She reached into the drawer of her nightstand, taking out a book, "Memnoch the Devil", by Anne Rice, and began to read, enjoying the warmth of the room. She read a few chapters, enjoying her "alone time".
She then felt a pang of hunger, and ignored it. She got up and started pacing, trying to distract herself from her persistent stomach. She opened her closet and stared at the mirror that was attached to the back of the door, she stared into her own eyes and told herself, over and over again, that to eat was to be weak, that she would never be pretty or slim if she ate, she told herself that she would never be liked if she was fat, and that eating would eventually make her that way... She repeated this until her stomach calmed down, she sighed and tucked her shoulder-length blond hair behind her eyes, she took a deep breath and closed her closet door.
Laynia put on the sneakers that she had thrown under her desk and made her way down to the gym, she was nervous and anxious and needed a run, she looked out of the window again before she left, to make sure that the constant patter at the window WAS rain, and continued on, to find an unoccupied treadmill.
